Well, everyone, we made it. Kinda.
Dragon Quest Your Story is finally on Netflix as of on February 13, 2020. Based on Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (my second-favorite DQ game, by the way), the Dragon Quest movie was met with mixed to negative reviews when it appeared in Japan last year. Did that stop me from being excited about it? No way!
For me, and probably many others, the likelihood that Dragon Quest Your Story would ever make it to the States–let alone with an English dub–seemed pretty slim. We speculated about it on the podcast last year when the movie was first announced, and then we talked about it again when we were discussing Dragon Quest in 2020 last month.
And now, after a surprisingly short amount of time (the movie hit theaters in Japan last August), the movie is on Netflix.
If you think I’m saying that too much, just remember that I never thought this moment would actually happen. It felt more like wishful thinking. It seemed even more unlikely that we’d get the movie here in the States after the film was met with mixed criticism, from the new art direction to the ending. And chances slimmed even more after Your Story was slapped with a lawsuit. Dragon Quest, after all, has always had a complicated history with its U.S. releases. So, a Dragon Quest movie with mixed reviews and a looming lawsuit didn’t exactly seem like something that would make it over here.
But here we are here! I couldn’t be more excited. Despite knowing some of the spoilers and some of the complaints people had with the film, I’m confident I’m going to enjoy it. You can find the movie on Netflix right here.
