Nintendo Switch Games to Play in December

We may have lost Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp as a big December release for the Switch, but there's still a lot of great games to check out during the Holidays!

The Kids We Were: Complete Edition – December 2

This adventure game has caught my eye thanks to its art style. A nostalgic, melancholy story told through voxels seems just weird enough to work.

Castle on the Coast – December 2

I loved a goofy 3D platformer, so this looked right up my alley the first time I looked at it. When I found out that the main character is the mascot for a children’s hospital and that some proceeds from the game are going to that institution, I was even more on board.

Word Forward – December 3

I love blockbuster titles and charming indie games as much of the rest of us. But I'll be perfectly honest – I spend a lot of time playing little puzzlers like 0h h1 and the many forms of Picross. Likewise, Word Forward looks perfectly focused on what it is: a new, digital form of Boggle (or, if you were hip in 2010, Words with Friends). And sometimes, that's enough – for a couple bucks, I'll gladly throw my brain against a curated collection of vocabulary puzzles. Some days, that's all I want and need.

Danganronpa Decadence – December 3

Have you ever been playing an Ace Attorney game and found yourself thinking “Man, this just isn't anime enough for me!”? If so, the Danganronpa series has you covered. In this visual novel/adventure game hybrid series, a group of high school students finds themselves trapped in a nightmarish game of death and deception. By gathering clues and holding trials, they attempt to find the killer(s) among their ranks. The Danganronpa Decadence collects the first three games in the franchise along with a bonus spin-off game, so this is a package chock full of over-the-top characters and murder mysteries.

Twelve Minutes – December 7

Owing either to its strong story hook or its surprising lineup of Hollywood talent, Twelve Minutes caught everybody's attention earlier this year. Now, it's up for “Best Indie” at the game awards and is set for a Switch debut. What's not to get excited about?

Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space Remastered – December 8

Sam & Max feel almost like the last man standing from the Golden Age of adventure games, probably owing to a seamless transition from 2D to 3D. Their crass charm always delights, and their previous Switch outing shows that the two can still show you a great time. Who doesn't love an old-school adventure game from time to time?

Monster Rancher 1 & 2 DX – December 9

I never played these games on PlayStation, but I remember hearing about their weird “use a music CD to generate a Pokémon-like creature” mechanics on the playground. I know that feature isn’t going to translate to this release, but it’s still cool to see a classic coming back.

Loop Hero – December 9

I like the time I spent with Loop Hero on PC a lot, but Switch is always where it should have been. This is a perfect game to have in your hands while you are planning to multitask, only to get too distracted by the game to do anything else.

Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon – December 13

Okay, I’ll admit, the trailers for this haven’t sold me on the idea yet. Shovel Knight is a great game, and this offshoot feels bizarre… but Shovel Knight is so good that I’m intrigued.

One Hand Clapping – December 14

I actually got a chance to try this one out on PC thanks to the developer a few months ago. My computer had some weird issues, but the game was pretty fun, very pretty little puzzle platformer where your own voice provided the energy needed to light lights, move platforms, and trigger other environmental interactions. I’m not sure how that’ll work on Switch, but it’s a super fun idea.

Clockwork Aquario – December 14

Clockwork Aquario is a release that has been nearly 30 years in the making. Originally developed by Westone, best known for the Wonder Boy series, in 1992 only to be canceled right before release, this game's time in the sun has been a long time coming. It's an adorable-looking arcade action-platformer that video game history buffs and retro game fans will absolutely want to check out.

Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth – December 16

Based on the classic fantasy novel and anime series, Record of Lodoss War, Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth is a Metroidvania with gorgeous pixel art and solid mechanics. I streamed the PC version of this game during Metroidvania May earlier this year and found that it sits comfortably in the same crowd as Symphony of the Night and Bloodstained. The story may be hard to follow if you don't have prior exposure to the Record of Lodoss War franchise, but the gameplay and graphics along make Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth more than worth the price of admission.
