Over the past little while, we’ve been hard at work putting together something really awesome — a new kind of video game magazine called PRESS START. We previewed it earlier this month, and now the big day is here…Issue #1 has been released to subscribers!

Inspired by Nintendo Force, and Like the Wind magazines, as well as Boss Fight Books, we wanted to put together something new. A magazine that tells stories about video games and their players, not just reporting news and reviewing things.

After reading publications like Nintendo Force and Boss Fight Books and Like the Wind Magazine, I realized there wasn’t a short-form, regular magazine about why we play video games and their effects on us. To me, it seemed like a pretty obvious oversight and gap in the market. One that I (and the fine folks here at Geek to Geek Media) could fill.

Nintendo Force is really the mag that got me thinking about this. After I supported their Patreon, I realized how much I love video game magazines. That has, apparently, never changed since I was a kid. NF is a spiritual successor to Nintendo Power, and it is good ole games journalism with all sorts of lists and fun articles, previews, and reviews. But their scope is journalistic, not personal.

Boss Fight Books is more in line with what I’m thinking with the style of in-depth stories and personal essays on video games and palyers. But they’re full books and not released in short intervals. You know, because they’re entire books. Plus, each one is written by only a single author, and isn’t a collection of different voices.

Which made me think of Like the Wind, a running magazine that pairs an artist with a writer’s essay about running, their lives, and what it means to them as a person. It’s not like a magazine of reviews and how-tos and advice like Runner’s World or Competitor. Each issue is like its own collection of essays on a particular theme.

So I thought “what if there was a video game magazine that combined all of that stuff?” Something for geeks and gamers that tells their stories in a way that really isn’t being done. I figured that if I wanted that kind of content, someone else did, too.

As it turns out, the folks at Geek to Geek wanted it, too. They took the idea and ran with it. And what you’ve got here is the result. This is the first of what we hope is many issues where we can tell the stories that matter to us about the games that matter to us.

And I guess that brings us to…well…here, the very first issue of PRESS START. Here’s hoping that it was just crazy enough to work.

Issue #1 is OUT NOW!

All that said, you can head over to the PRESS START Patreon and subscribe for your monthly goodness. We really appreciate your support, and we cannot wait to hear what you have to say about the magazine!
