Icewind Dale: Rime Of The Frostmaiden Makes The Perfect Creepy Christmas Campaign

Christmas can be scary. Krampus. Gremlins. Sandy Claws. That time Ron Weasley had to wear his uncle’s outdated robes to the Yule Ball. And if you’re looking to get into some spooky Christmas Dungeons & Dragons sessions this year, look no further than Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden.

Snowy setting? Check. Northern lights? Check. Creepy mysterious stuff lurking in the darkness? Check.

It’s everything you need to have a creepy time at Christmas this year with D&D.

Dungeons & Dragons’ Christmas Cheer Fear

Most of Rime of the Frostmaiden feels like H.P. Lovecraft trying to write a fantasy novel. Sometimes, it even feels like The Thing if Kurt Russell’s character had been a high elf. It’s got all the makings of a great horror campaign, and with the right DM and planning, it can turn into a creepy Christmas campaign.

You don’t even need that much creativity. Sure, you could always substitute Auril the Frostmaiden for Santa the Toymaker, but you don’t have to (and I wouldn’t personally recommend that). Between the snowy setting and the sparkling aurora that trails across the night sky, it already feels kinda like a Winter Wonderland with a dose of Lovecraftian malice.

Between the insidious creatures that stalk the wintry night, and a mystery that spans the icy North, Icewind Dale already feels like some haunted house version of the North Pole. For anyone looking to try to get some creepiness into their Christmas this year, Rime of the Frostmaiden is excellent.

So, crack open some eggnog (or ale-nog?) and get ready for scary times that are sure to make your blood run cold. And, heck, if you want to turn Auril into Santa Claus or turn chwingas into Santa’s elves, that’s fine. It’s Dungeons & Dragons, after all. The game is what you make it .
