I Got Fired. So I Went to Gen Con.

At 8am last Monday, I lost my job.

On Tuesday morning, I set out for the 7-hour drive to Indianapolis, Indiana to attend Gen Con and take part in the 50th anniversary celebration of Dungeons & Dragons and cover a lot of other games as a member of the press. I made a lot of connections, handed out a lot of pamphlet adventures, and got some cool games and books I’m going to be posting about very very very soon.

Needless to say, I’ve been feeling a whole lot of things these past 7 days.

Despite alternating between rage at how they could do this to me and sadness that I’d lost my job and income, there was also a twinge of hope involved. Because of all of you.

While I apply for other jobs, I am giving completely into content creation. For the time being, my full-time job is going to be creating stuff for y’all. Like I always said, treat it like the job you want it to be. So now, it’s not only the job I want it to be, it’s the job I have.

Because of your support, I have this existing avenue to move forward. That gives me hope. I already have a path I can take to set myself up as the creator I am (but haven’t had time for until now).

What’s Next and What You Can Do To Help

Well, first off, you can also check out any of my content on DTRPG or DMs Guild.

Then, there’s my new Patreon at https://patreon.com/bjkgames. That will probably be my home base on the internet more than anything moving forward.

Reviews of different games and books, interviews with creators, and lots of content for the games themselves like adventures, monsters, magic items, and other kinds of cool stuff like subclasses, random tables, and anything else you can think of.

Patreon bjk games

Patreon seems to be a better place for RPG content creators than Substack based on discussions I’ve had with other folks, but I am going to experiment to see about that.

I will be posting all sorts of exclusive stuff over that way like exclusive TTRPG content and probably podcasts and that sort of thing.

So yeah. It’s been a hell of a week.

In the coming time, expect more posts on the cool stuff I got and can share, like the Shadowdark and Dungeon Crawl Classics core books, Valda’s Spire of Secrets from Mage Hand Press, the AAW Games’ Mini Dungeons II hardcover.

Oh, and the new Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Player’s Handbook (which is actually quite good, and I can’t wait to use it in my games.)

Stay tuned, friendos, and like I said before…thank you. I couldn’t give this a real shot if it wasn’t for you already being here and as awesome as you are.

So, again, thank you. I’ll see you soon. Wish me luck!
