Ps5 console and dualsense

Beej’s Most Anticipated PlayStation 5 Games

The PS5 announcement event really surprised me. Not necessarily because the console was revealed to be gigantic and looks like a robot from a super cool anime I've probably never seen, but because the number of games that were showcased that I actually felt as though I'd want to play.

See, usually there aren't launch titles that I care too much about. The last time I bought a console “at launch” was the Xbox 360, and I waited years on getting both a PS3 and PS4. Even the Nintendo Switch was delayed by a few months — but that was because of supply issues, not launch titles being lackluster.

The PS5, though, actually wowed me with some of the titles that it has coming this fall. Not all of them (I am so not a Demon's Souls guy), but a lot of them. I wanna talk about some of the cooler ones that might just make me buy a PS5 at launch.

Marvel's Spider-man: Miles Morales

I'm not gonna say a ton about this one since every single gaming site in the world has picked it up and raved about how great this one looks. But I have to mention it at the top of my list for one reason: the original Spider-man for PS4 is the reason I decided to get a PS4 over sticking with PC gaming or getting an Xbox One.

There's no way that I can miss this one on Day One. If that means grabbing a PlayStation 5 to swing through New York as Miles, then so be it. (And if I can do it on the PS4 and it's the only actual launch title that I care about, then…it'll be a harder decision.)

Stray

I honestly don't know what this one is about. But it combines 3 of my favorite things:

  • kitties
  • robots
  • cyberpunk style

So I'm there. There aren't a lot of reasons for me to think I won't pick this one up. I mean, even if it turns out to be a Death Stranding kind of game where I just wander around and pee on things, at least I'm wandering around and peeing on things as a cute kitty instead of Norman Reedus.

The gameplay on this one should be interesting based on the trailer, and the aesthetic actually looks really cool. I expect they're doing a bit more with Stray than we can really see right now, so I am incredibly excited to see what the final product of kitty's robot adventure tale turns out to look like.

Marvel's Avengers

The original announcement for this game was kind of lame. I didn't really look forward to it. Then Square Enix announced that Kamala Khan was one of the main characters, and I jumped head-first into it. I've already pre-ordered the PS4 version of the game, and if I'm not mistaken, you get generational cross-play with the PS5 if you own it.

So…yeah. I can't wait to smash some stuff online and co-op with y'all.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

I think it was someone on Discord who said that the travel in this one looked like Spidey's web-swinging on steroids. And it's not totally off-the-mark. The dimensional rift travel actually looks mind-bending in a way I can't articulate because I can't fully tell what's going on when they do it in the video.

Which is a great thing. I haven't looked forward to a 3d platformer in a long time, and knowing that Ratchet and Clank is getting top-tier placement with the PS5 launch titles makes me happy. I loved the originals, so I am sure I will love this one, too.

Resident Evil 8: Village

I owned the original RE in the original box, maybe even first week of release. It was in the long, black PlayStation 1 boxes made out of cardboard. My goodness, I wish I had saved that thing. Regardless, I loved the original RE games. Up through 3.

When the series went the action route with 4, I kind of dropped off and never went back. But I hear that 7 did some amazing things to return the series to its creepfest origins, and RE8 looks to be no different. I haven't been a survival horror player for a long time, but from the trailer on this one…I think I might have to be again.

Project Athia

Okay, so I am hesitantly excited about this one. Watching the stream, I totally wanted to see a Dragon Quest XII or Final Fantasy XVI reveal of some kind from Square Enix. But it didn't happen. Of course. It was a pipe dream anyway.

What we did get, though, was a new action/adventure or action RPG IP called Project Athia. I am cautiously optimistic about this one. Because it looks really cool. However, the developers are a new SE studio, Luminous Productions, and they're mainly comprised of Final Fantasy XV devs. While I liked XV from a narrative standpoint, the combat is hot garbage, so I hope at Project Athia doesn't inherit that much from their previous work.

That said, it's pretty, and I am always in the mood for a new, fantastic SE property. So we'll see how it goes!

The Console Itself?

And then there's the console itself. And then there's the console itself. The giant white monster (which I actually totally like the design of). With no set date as of yet, there are guesses out there that the PS5 will see it's release just after November 20th, as that was the potential release date of the DualSense Controller, with the console being available just before Black Friday.

It would only make sense for Sony to release it then because people are in the moods to buy around that point anyway, it's close enough to the holidays that people will still need to buy gifts, and with it being before Thanksgiving in the US means that more people will likely run out and grab it to play over the extended holiday, too.

My only real disappointments with the PS5 itself are that the physical version will probably cost more than the digital-only console and that it's not a handheld/console docking machine like the Switch. I'll buy the physical version, myself, because I am not going to ditch physical media altogether, and when I am in the mood for handhelds, I still have my Vita, 3DS, and Switch.

What are you looking forward to the most about the PlayStation 5?

  1. I still haven’t completely decided between PS5 and XBSX, but there’s only a couple games I’m truly interested in, thus far:

Yakuza: Like a Dragon – I really dig these games and their gameplay, but I’m excited to see this new version.

Star Wars: Squadrons – I loved the whole X-Wing/Tie Fighter series and cannot wait for the spiritual successor.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 – Never played the first one, but I’m beyond excited for this one. I really enjoyed Vampyr, and VtM: Coteries of New York, so I’m ready for this on.

That’s about it for me. There’s a couple more that might peak my interest as it get’s closer, but these are the only day one purchases I foresee.
