I'm a sucker for games that feel like the ones I remember growing up playing. Shovel Knight has been the gold standard of modern retro gaming for a long time. The key is capturing the classic feel while incorporating modern niceties. Astalon: Tears of the Earth is an excellent challenger to the throne. This game features three characters, each with a distinct style, exploring a sprawling castle as they try to fulfill a promise to a god of death. The gameplay, map, and presentation are all beautifully handcrafted. This game is so engrossing that it's been hard for me to do much else.

Chatting with Matt and Jon, the Creators of Astalon: Tears of the Earth

I'm still nowhere near finishing this game, but I can already tell you that I love this game. I've even had a chance to chat with Matt Kap and Jon Lepage, the creators of the game, and getting to know them made me love it even more!

Check this video to hear the interview and then hear me react live to my first session playing the game, and stay tuned for a full review in the future!

Be sure to follow Matt, Jon, and LABS Works on Twitter, and check out Astalon: Tears of the Earth on your platform of choice and Middara, Jon's Weekly Geekery!
